Prohibition and limit signs

Not started

White discs with a red border that tell you what you may NOT do, which classes may not use the road, and the limits you may not exceed.

Prohibition signs are white discs with a red border, usually with a red diagonal bar through a black symbol. Temporary versions have a yellow disc. The symbol tells you what is forbidden: no left turn / no right turn (straight arrows, at the sign), no left or right turn at the next junction (bent arrows), no U-turn, no stopping (S), no parking (P), no overtaking (two cars; applies for 500 m unless a plate says otherwise), no overtaking by goods vehicles, excessive noise prohibited (no hooting for 100 m), hitch-hiking prohibited (no picking up passengers for 500 m), and class prohibitions for pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles, goods vehicles, buses, towed vehicles, animal-drawn vehicles and hawkers.

Know the difference between no stopping and no parking: at a no-parking sign you may still stop briefly to load or set down passengers; at a no-stopping sign you may not stop at all except to avoid a collision or obey a traffic officer.

Limit prohibition signs have the same red border but no diagonal bar. They set a value you may not exceed: speed limits (40, 60, 80, 100, 120 km/h), height (metres, including the load and antenna), width, length (including trailers and projections), gross vehicle mass and axle mass (tons). A yellow disc with two black bars means access is temporarily limited to authorised vehicles.

Selective restriction plates beneath a sign narrow when or to whom it applies: times (06:00-09:00), days, day or night symbols, a vehicle class (motorcycles, minibuses), a distance (For 2 km) or a direction. A red cross over a prohibition or limit sign (de-restriction) means the restriction has ended.
