How the real test works now

64

64 random questions

Each candidate gets a different paper: 28 rules of the road, 28 signs & markings, 8 vehicle controls, pulled at random from the national bank.

3

Three separate pass marks

Rules 22/28, Signs 23/28, Controls 6/8. Fail any one section and you fail the whole test — the 8 controls questions sink more people than anything else.

60

60 minutes, no going back

Questions appear one at a time on a touch screen. Once you confirm an answer you move on. Your result is calculated the moment you finish.

ID

Fingerprint verified

Identity is checked biometrically and the paper is generated by the eNaTIS system, so there is no way to know the questions in advance — you have to actually know the material.

W. Cape CLLT 2025/26

CLLT stands for Computerised Learner's Licence Test: the touch-screen learner's licence exam that replaced the old paper tests (Test A, B and C).

Nationally the pass rate fell from 68% to 40% after the switch; in the Western Cape only 17% passed on the new system in 2025/26. The content is the same syllabus — but learners who studied by memorising Test A, B and C are now facing questions they have never seen, phrased in ways they have never seen.
